Muscles as Fuel

Hope you like the new site design. I sure do.

Dr. Rosedale, of whom you have heard before here, has a brief discussion on Dr. Mercola's web site about why many people are using their muscles as a source of fuel because they eat too much sugar and sugar-like foods. This includes the body builders who eat 4 or more times per day if they fall back on easy to prepare foods or protein drinks and bars.

Eating fat and sugary or starchy foods at the same time is a particularly bad practice. Eating sugar and protein together, a common practice of body builders, is not much better. Both the fat and the protein are directed to fat stores when sugar is available since it is the preferred fuel because it is so important to the brain. You've heard of this before in my Living LIFO post.

I really like the new digs but there seem to be some bugs with the links. One example:

1. Search for "Living Lifo"
2. Click on "Living Lifo" in the search results and you're taken to the latest post.

Looking at the URLs and exploring the archives it appears that the links in the search engine are missing an 'a'. For example, the search engine link to the LIFO post is: http://www.arthurdevany.com/archives/evolutionary_fitness/index.html#000080

But you need an 'a' after the '#" to actually get there: http://www.arthurdevany.com/archives/evolutionary_fitness/index.html#a000080

Otherwise, looks real nice and thanks for all the great content.

Art,

I, myself, am a fan of Dr. Rosedale's work. You seem to be as well, considering the fact that you've posted links to his work many a time on this blog. An area where you two seem to part ways is an area that I find myself confused. Dr. Rosedale notes the benefits of fruit but strongly feels that it should be avoided due to it's relatively high sugar content (he notes that the high levels of fructose are especially bothersome). You seem to be a fan of fruit and consume a good deal of it. For the most part I lump myself in your category. Dr. Rosedale's science is very convincing though and I constantly find myself questioning my fruit consumption. What's your opinion on fruit in the context of an EvFit lifestyle and optimal health/longevity? Thanks for your time.

Grains and vegetables are not the simple starch or sugary foods we are talking about. The vegetables are great, but I have other problems with grains beside the fact that many grain-derived products are sweetened. You have to ask Clarence how he does it; I am sure he avoids the flours and other products that are pretending to be grains. They aren't.

By the way, it is not the opposite of the Evolutionary Diet, which is significantly composed of plant foods.

How do you know it works well for Clarence or, more importantly, you? Low body fat is not an indicator of good health.

There is one thing I'm confused about concerning proper diet: how can the grain/quasi-vegetarian diet recommended by Clarence Bass work so well for him? His body fat is around 5%. I was actually raised on a diet of whole grains and vegetables, with small amounts of meat and never had excess body fat until moving away to college. This kind of diet seems to be the opposite of the Evolutionary Diet, but it does seem to work for many people. How do you explain that?
