I don't have a TV so I haven't seen the commercials for Brokeback Mountain, but I have read that the ads give no idea of what the movie is actually about. I first noticed this phenomenon with the ads for the movie "Bullworth" many years ago. The commercial blip showed Warren Beatty as the fictional senator Bullworth speaking to a black church, telling them they will never get anywhere if they keep blaming others for their problems and eating fried foods. The advertisers knew that this type of political incorrectness would resonate with a wide audience. However, the movie itself was just an annoying collection of leftist claptrap.

If you study movie promotions in general, I'm sure you will find many examples of this type of deceptive advertising. When you have to basically lie about the product you are selling, I think it's safe to say that your product line is defective.
