The Horror

This pile of boxes was outside the gym after they had restocked the "health food" section. They picked it up later (it is a very clean place), but I caught the horrifying sight on my iPhone before they cleared it out. How much sugar or high glycemic fructose did those boxes contain? Too much, but "heh" they are protein bars aren't they.

Don't eat anything that comes in a box.

Yuneek,

Studies on "meat" never isolate it from processed meats. Beef doesn't have hormones or antibiotics. The idea that it does is a myth propagated by the grass-fed farmers. If you can afford to get meats from farms, good for you. But please don't try to scare us with epidemiological studies.

"This is not natural meat and should, properly, be a topic of research to see how it negatively impacts health."

Or if it does, you mean. Correlation is not cause. You need long-term, randomized, controlled trials, that isolate other factors in modern diets. Please follow the Scientific Method. Don't blame meat, of any kind, without irrefutable evidence. Don't slip into the same loose thinking as Cordain.

"I am convinced that much of the negative health effects associated with red meat in the diet is, in fact, not from read meat, per se, but the modern big business version of it that is available in the store."

This sounds like a religious belief, which ignores the flawed nature of the available evidence. There is no proof that meat of any kind is unhealthy. It could be processed meats, or other foods, that are to blame. Correlation is not causality.

"Don't eat anything that comes in a box."

Or a bag, or a can, or a pouch.

Big business is not your friend. It is interested in things like shelf life, "flavor enhancement" (to make up for real flavor which has been processed out), and shareholder profit. In fact several legal decisions have codified that corporations have responsibility to shareholders specifically, not you or your health.

At this point even the beef you buy in the store is a construct of big business. Artificially fattened and fed all kinds of chemicals, hormones and crap. This is not natural meat and should, properly, be a topic of research to see how it negatively impacts health. I am convinced that much of the negative health effects associated with red meat in the diet is, in fact, not from read meat, per se, but the modern big business version of it that is available in the store.

Even more horrifying is that deceptively named Nutrigrain bars are a daily breakfast staple at the school where I teach, along with fruit juices, flavored milks and artificially sweetened cereals. Once a week, the kids get something close to real food - bagged apple slices. Most of the children who eat breakfast at school are children fed at government expense, not all of whom are actually needy, judging by some of the vehicles their parents drive.

Years ago I was shopping with my nephew at a local grocery store. I thought this might be an appropriate time for some "uncle advice." I said,"Box begins with 'B,' which stands for Bad. Green (like in vegetables) begins with 'G,' which stands for Good." Unfortunately he opted for the boxes.

On the other hand, raw fruits and vegetables continue to put in a strong showing...

I like your summary and plan to deploy it often -- "Don't eat anything that comes in a box." WIN.

It's amazing what the food industry does to disguise junk like that as "healthy." It's a constant battle to get my 8 year old to eat a reasonably healthy diet. The school is the worst! The lunch menue is a disaster and I often find the food I send in his lunch box untouched. Now, there is talk of installing Coke machines in the hallway....wonderful.
