I have added the latest material to this controversial paper that challenges the effect of steroids on home run hitting in MLB. It has been a long time going through the editorial process because the journal, Economic Inquiry, moved to a new university. It should appear soon.

The new material includes a short study done by the son of my old friend George Stigler. Steven Stigler and a colleague examined the home run hitting of a few players who were known to have used steroids---it also looks at the records of some of the pitchers. The result? A slight reduction in effectiveness. Why? Steroids don't work and they were used primarily by players who were injured or near the end of their careers.

The variation is so huge in home run hitting that the changes are just part of the natural variation in this difficult task. Many small variations have to come together to produce a big year for a hitter.
