This issue will come up again. Partly because of my recent interview on CafeHayek with Russ Roberts and partly because there may be prosecutions in the future. The impending publication of my paper Steroids, Home Runs, and the Law of Genius in Economic Inquiry may also add some interest, though the paper has already had wide exposure.
Since I have not gotten to reposting my old posts on the (in)-effectiveness of steroids in enhancing performance or even stimulating the growth of more muscle mass, I am directing readers to this broad and rather thorough coverage of the up and down-side of steroids in the New York Times. The article is not aimed at athletic performance; rather it points to the risks and benefits of steroids which are often used in inflammatory diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis or asthma.
The down-side far overwhelms the up-side for an athlete. There is no upside, but for a possible benefit to heavy trainers for short time periods.
