A Puzzle about Skin Color
publication date: Aug 13, 2010
The puzzle over skin color and vitamin D is becoming more clear. We know that a homo Erectus skeleton was found in Europe that showed evidence of vitamin D deficiency. This early ancestor would have had dark skin as an adaptation to the sun exposure in Africa and had probably been one of the early humans to leave Africa, about one million years ago. But, modern very light skin color developed only about 10,000 years ago. It is probably an adaptation to the increased disease burden associated with the transition from hunting and gathering to agriculture.
