At long last, the problem of using BMI to judge body fatness versus muscle is under critical examination. Have a look at another NYT article for a new look at BMI, which is old to my readers.
Imagine telling older people and even women to lift weights to retain their muscle tissue, as I have been saying for years. Notice also, the correction for the so-called paradox that the overweight have a higher survival rate than the underweight following a heart attack. It is no paradox; the overweight have more muscle mass. It isn't the fat, its the muscle and strength that keeps them alive.
