Myocardial fibrosis is the development of fibrous tissue in heart muscle. It alters the dynamics of heart contraction and relaxation and puts rigid tissue where contracting heart muscle should be. Until now, true veteran endurance athletes have not been seperated out from runners who are old but have not been at it for a lifetime and have not done the heavy competitive miles. When the lifelong runners are taken by themselves, they fare badly and have severely damaged hearts.
