Glutathione, the master antioxidant and detoxifer
Jul 3, 2011
I seldom refer to the HuffingtonPost, but this
article
is worthwhile as a popular explanation of the role of glutathione and its cooperation with alpha lipoic acid, vit C, E, B6, and related B vitamins, and sources of sulpher in your food.
Competition for Glutathione and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
Jun 24, 2011
The immune system and muscle tissue compete for glutathione (GSH); the immune system uses it to protect the lympocytes from the oxidation they use to destroy pathogens, and muscle uses it to protect the mitochondria and the cellular DNA from the reactive oxygen species that result from exercise. When you over exercise, you deplete the GSH that is available to the immune system. So, you may get sick. When you get an infection, you deplete the GSH available to your muscle and you get fatigued.
Glutathione, Aging and Cancer
Jun 15, 2011
Here is a bit more on why I think supplementing with glutathione (GSH) is a good practice as we get older. The mechanisms through which GSH reduces aging and prevents cancer are described (to the extent they are known, there may be others such as preventing cell senescence of cells by reducing oxidation of telomeres so that the Hayflick limit is not hit).
Glutathione in HIV-Positive Patients
Jun 15, 2011
HIV-positive patients acquire glutathione deficiency. Glutathione is called the master antioxidant because it is central to controlling ROS, free radicals that damage cells. In addition to HIV-positives, diabetics, and asthmatics also develop a pathogenic deficiency of glutathione. Drs. Demopoulus, Seligman, Ollerenshway and Richie recently presented the results of a clinical trial of a bioavailable glutathione, Ultrathione, in HIV-positive patients, whose acquired deficiency is well-established and used as a model of glutathione deficiency. Intracellular repletion of glutathione was demonstrated within 30 minutes of dosing. As many of you may know by now, I have taken
Ultrathione
for more than 25 years and believe it is an important factor in how I age.
