Marathons, "Fat-blockers", and Testosterone-boosters
Jan 4, 2012
I am up a little early today and looking over a marathon training manual that will get you to sub 3.5 times. I would like to also comment on those "fat blockers" and T-boosters that are so heavily advertised lately.
Chaos Training
Dec 4, 2011
Another area where training is starting to get the message of fractal physiology and power law training that I have practiced for a very long time.
Here
the training introduces a power-law distributed task to mimic natural movement.
Some Tax Data
Nov 6, 2011
This is so much in the news that I thought some data might clarify who pays and how much the government collects through taxes.
Smart Bacteria

You have to see this marvelous
talk
about communication and decision-making by bacteria.
Dr. Ben-Jacob is a great scientist and thinker.
Dr. Ben Goldacre on Bad Medical and Nutritional Science
Oct 5, 2011
Dr. Goldacre covers most of the bad science in this fast and funny talk.
Peak Events Again, this time glucose peaks
Sep 10, 2011
More on this theme of what I would call fractal physiology, a physiology that is sensitive to peak events. I would call it extremal physiology in line with my long-standing emphasis on the importance of extreme events in almost everything.
My UCLA/Harvard Talk on Extreme Statistics in Movies and Pharmaceuticals
Aug 10, 2011
Pharmaceutical firms look for blockbusters, just as movie studios do. The Technology Management group at Harvard Business School noted this similarity and invited me to speak on modeling the wild statistics of the movies and what that might mean for the behavior and organization of the pharmaceutical industry. I gave a similar, but less lengthly and detailed talk at UCLA on the same topic. The slides for the talk are available as a PDF file. Unfortunately, it lacks many of the tables and graphics on the movies. But, it does have some fascinating statistical properties of pharmaceuticals that show dramatic similarity to the movies
Matt Ridley on the Profits (not a misspelling) of Doom
Jun 26, 2011
I am reading Matt's book, The Rational Optimist, and enjoying it immensely. It has a nice discussion of life during the Paleolithic and the Dark Ages.
Longevity among hunter-gatherers
Jun 6, 2011
A question asked of we who follow some aspect of an ancetral lifestyle is: how can this be helpful since ancient humans had a life expectancy of 30 years?
Of course, that is the wrong question. The right question is: given your present age, how might your health and longevity increase by adopting an ancestral diet, intermittent, playful exercise, and a lower stress lifeway?
The answer there is compellingly positive. We made it through childhood and are alive now. So, the right question is not how long did HGs live, but how might our longevity be improved and the quality-weighted years of life be extended by adopting a lifestyle modeled on ancestral diet, activity, and socialization?
Turning Points
May 17, 2011
I have enjoyed the many emails I get from readers who have changed the course of their lives by following some form of Evolutionary Fitness. There are several books out there that would not exist but for Loren Cordain and myself putting the science and practical wisdom out there for others to see. But, I have reached a turning point in my journey in this exploration.
